Ready...Set...Read!

Motivating Children to Read
Since 2000, Assistance League of Inland North County has been teaming with north county schools to encourage elementary school children to read. Over the past 5 years, chapter volunteers have worked in school libraries or classrooms at Juniper Elementary in Escondido, Pauma Elementary and Garden Road Elementary in Poway. Volunteers work one-on-one with children as they follow up their reading with conversations about their books and take quizzes to document their reading comprehension.

Assistance League has given over $30,000 to the schools to purchase books and companion software for Accelerated Reader, the computer based literacy program used in this project. In addition to the books and software to document student comprehension, the program also provides teachers with an efficient record keeping system that helps them monitor, evaluate and guide their students as they grow in their independent reading skills.

In 2006, children's authors Bruce Hale and Barney Saltzberg have visited 5 area schools. The authors' daylong visits to each school are exciting literary events that get students more deeply engaged with reading. The visits and copies of the authors' books are provided by the chapter.

Assistance League volunteers have also created audio tapes of children's books for teachers in the participating schools. Teachers select book titles they would like to have volunteers record and subsequently use these tapes to provide reinforcement and practice in reading.
