Support for Foster Teens
Operation Duffel Bags provides foster teens graduating from San Pasqual Academy in San Diego with large, rolling bags filled with needed supplies to help them begin life on their own. Assistance League members purchase and solicit donations of blankets, sheets, towels, toiletries, phone cards, stationery supplies, stamps, first aid kits, cameras, sewing kits, alarm clocks and department store and grocery gift cards. Each bag is valued at over $300.00.
Assistance League also provides the Academy with laundry baskets filled with housekeeping supplies. Some graduates will take them to college or their first apartment. Other baskets will be placed in cottages that the Academy is in the process of refurbishing on the campus. The cottages will serve as transitional homes for those academy graduates attending local community colleges or working nearby and as comfortable residences for academy graduates during Christmas and summer vacations when their university or college dormitories are closed.
San Pasqual Academy — first of its kind in the nation — is a four-year, not-for-profit residential high school for foster teens. The 150-student campus provides a safe, stable and caring environment where they learn the academic, social and life skills that will allow them to become productive and successful adults. There are over 7,000 foster children in San Diego County.
